George Clooney Fraudsters in Prison
Two Italians blamed of posing as US actor George Clooney to sponsor a fashion business have been under arrest in Thailand after years on the run.
Francesco Galdelli, 58 years old, and Vanja Goffi, 45 years old, has been wanted on an Interpol red notice since 2013.
The Hollywood star prosecuted them and in a 2010 trial in Italy appeared against them, saying they had illegally used his name.
They are also blamed of a series of other cheats and scams in Italy.
They had run away their home country to avoid custody and had been dubbed the Italian Bonnie and Clyde after the legendary US gangster couple.
They are in prison on Saturday in a joint operation of Thai and Italian the system on the outskirts of the Thai city of Pattaya, Thailand’s Crime Suppression Division said on Sunday.
“During examination, Francesco admitted to demanding to be George Clooney and opening a clothes business to trick people into sending money,” news agency AFP said citing Thai police.
The couple had been living in Thailand since 2014 allowing to authorities. That year Mr. Galdelli had been under arrest but runaway during his trial.
According to Italian media, they are continued their life in Thailand by selling false Rolex watches online.
They will be charged for protracting their visas before repatriation proceedings begin, police said.
